Pitbulls have a reputation for being aggressive because they were bred and trained to fight other animals in the past. It’s also common to see news reports warning about their attacks.
But will a Pit Bull turn on you? The idea of a Pit Bullbecoming attacking its owners or other people can be very scary because all owners want their dogs to be friendly.
A Pit Bull will turn on you if it was not trained properly or if it was provoked. Well-trained Pit Bulls tend to remain loyal to their owners and obedient, especially if they are given enough care and affection. However, if Pit Bulls are abused or threatened, they will become aggressive and attack in self-defense.
Keep reading to learn more about why Pit Bulls attack their owners, the signs that a Pit Bull is about to attack, and how to prevent your Pit Bull from turning aggressive.
Will A Pit Bull Turn On You?
Pit Bulls are not inherently aggressive and will never turn on their owners or attack them without a proper reason. A Pit Bull will only turn on you if it was not trained properly from a young age or if it was provoked.
Just like any other dog breed, Pit Bulls are a product of their upbringing and living conditions. Any aggressive behavior from the owner will result in equally aggressive behavior in the puppy. So, as long as you train your Pit Bull and treat it well, it will have no reason to become aggressive or turn on you.
Why Do Pit Bulls Attack Their Owners?
The main reason why Pit Bulls might attack their owners is that they had never received proper training and socialization when they were young, so they never learned not to be aggressive.
Another reason they might attack their owners is that they were provoked or threatened, so they will attack to defend themselves.
Sign that Your Pit Bull Is About to Attack
It’s important for any dog owner to have a good understanding of your their dog’s body language, so you can anticipate how it’s going to behave in certain situations and act accordingly to prevent its behavior from escalating.
Dogs show different signs of aggression depending on their temperament and the situation. However, there are common signs that usually indicate that the dog is about to attack, and you should pay close attention to these signs.
Some of the signs that your Pit Bull is about to attack include:
- Grinding and baring its teeth
- Barking and growling excessively
- Lowering its head and avoiding direct eye contact
- Pulling back its ears completely until they’re flat against their heads
- Raising its tail in an upright rigid position
- Moving its tail back and forth rapidly
If you notice any of these signs in your dog’s body language, you need to separate the dog from others and give it some time to calm down; otherwise, its behavior will escalate to aggression, and it will start attacking.
It’s also important to determine the exact reason why the dog showed signs of aggression in the first place, whether it sensed a threat or was provoked in any way, so you can prevent it from happening again.
Do Pit Bulls Attack Intruders?
Pit Bulls attack intruders to protect their owners or if they are provoked. They can be very territorial and protective, so they will become aggressive and attack if they sense a threat.
There are also some owners who train their Pit Bulls to attack intruders on command. I discuss this in detail in my guide on how to train your Pit Bull to be a guard dog.
Do Female Pit Bulls Attack More Than Male Pit Bulls?
Female Pit Bulls might attack more than male Pit Bulls because they tend to be more protective over their territories, especially if there’s a litter of puppies involved.
If female Pit Bulls sense any threat coming toward them or their puppies, their maternal instincts will drive them to attack.
Are Pit Bull Attacks Fatal?
Pit Bull attacks can be fatal to both humans and other dogs. According to police reports, Pit Bulls have been responsible for up to 77% of fatalities due to dog bites in the United States for the past sixteen years.
The main reason their attacks are so dangerous is that Pit Bulls have a strong bite. The force of their bite can measure up to 235 PSI, which is considerably strong for a domestic dog breed.
Although their teeth are not very sharp, Pit Bull bites can still cause serious injuries, such as breaking bones or tearing muscles. That’s mainly due to the powerful jaws that allow them to hold on to their prey even if it is moving at a great speed.
Do Pit Bulls Get Aggressive with Age?
Pit Bulls do not get aggressive with age. If they are provided with proper socialization and training early on in their lives, they will grow to be loyal, affectionate, and friendly towards people and other animals around them, with very little chance of them becoming aggressive.
As mentioned before, Pit Bulls will only become aggressive in self-defense when they are threatened and provoked.
How to Prevent Your Pit Bull from Turning Aggressive?
The most important about training your Pit Bull not to be aggressive is to make sure it’s properly socialized when it’s young.
Socialization will teach your Pit Bull not to perceive other humans or dogs as a threat, which will prevent it from developing aggressive tendencies as it matures.
To properly socialize your Pit Bull, you need to introduce it to different scents and sounds. You also need to allow it to interact with other humans and dogs in a safe environment.
Another important about training your Pit Bull is to use proper discipline methods to encourage or punish certain behaviors.
If you want to encourage certain behavior, you need to use the positive reinforcement method. This involves identifying the things that motivate your dog the most, including toys, traits, or even praise, then presenting your dog with any of those things to your dog whenever it displays good behavior.
If you want to punish a certain behavior, you must avoid using aggression like beating or yelling at your dog, as this will only make it feel threatened and provoke it to attack in self-defense. Instead, it’s more effective to stop giving your dog attention whenever it displays that behavior because all Pit Bulls hate being ignored.
Are Pit Bulls Hard to Train?
Pit Bulls are not hard to train. They are smart and always eager to please their owners, which makes them more likely to learn commands quickly.
However, keep in mind that the training process will go more smoothly if you start early on in your dog’s life. You can learn more about how to correctly discipline a Pit Bull here.
